Welcome Year 3!
We are excited to welcome you to your new classroom and learning. This year has some exciting topics and experiences in store, and we are looking forward to exploring them together. We aim to make your Year 3 journey at St Mary's a memorable one and hope you do too.
Our Christian Values
During the Summer term, our Christian values are Honesty and Determination.
"For we aim at what is honourable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man." Corinthians 8:21
Summer 2 will focus on the value of Determination.

Love of reading
Our class novel for this half-term is 'Tilly Mint Tales'
English
Our weekly routine will include spelling and grammar, handwriting and guided reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential, and we would ask that you question your child regularly on the book they are reading to develop a deeper understanding of a range of texts, to develop new vocabulary and strengthen writing skills. It is also very important that children practise their handwriting skills both in and out of school. St Mary;s has secured a handwriting scheme that allows just this. You should receive a letter with the log in details for your child.
In the second Summer term we will use Zeraffa Giraffa by Diane Hoffmeyer to further develop our writing skills. Pupils will be writing a leaflet to persuade visitors to see Zeraffa in Paris. Children will work on their persuasive writing, using the present perfect and progressive form of writing, Pupils will be expected to organise their work logically, using opening statements, subheadings and a range of other organisational tools. Pupils will also need to use 2nd or 3rd person to talk directly to the reader.
Our Pathways to Read text will be 'The Egyptian Cinderella' by Shirley Climo. The text will be used to teach pupils how to retrieve and record information from non-fiction, developing dictionary skills and the ability to identify and summarise information.
Spelling
We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our English lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules, as well as the Y3/4 words.
Maths
As mathematicians, pupils will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
During the Summer 2 we will focus on Measurement, a further fractions unit and practice of more difficult units from throughout the year, to close any gaps.
Science
As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities. This half term we will be investigating and understanding plants and their life cycle. Pupils will begin to identify and describe the functions of different parts of the plant and what they need to live. They will also investigate how water is transported within plants.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. This half term we will be continuing to focus on rules for living. Which rules shall we follow? In this unit, the need for rules to live by is discussed and linked to the events of the Fall (Genesis 3), the rescue of the PEOPLE OF GOD followed by the gift of the 10 commandments (Exodus 19 and 20) and the impact of Jesus’ new command in the GOSPEL to love one another.
The aim of this unit is to: give pupils an opportunity to consider the value and purpose of rules, examine Christian rules for living and the source of these rules, encourage pupils to reflect upon their own lifestyle and the influences upon it and investigate the rules followed by two/three world faiths and the ways in which these rules influence behaviour and decisions.
History
In History this half-term, we will learn about ‘The Romans’ and how life changed during this period. Pupils will be able to use dates and historical terms to describe events whilst building an overview of world history and how social and cultural changes have occurred over time. They will place events on a timeline.
Geography
During Summer 2, pupils will be learniing all about settletments, where people live and why? They will discover OS maps and begin to locate village, towns and cities, understanding the key features. Pupils will begin to describe and explain why settlements are established in certain areas, why thery grow and how they can change. They will develop map skills, the ability to investigate patterns or places and be able to communicate georgraphically.
PE
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Striking & Fielding
Pupils should be taught to: use running, jumping, throwing, catching and passing in isolation and in combination as well as play competitive games, modified where appropriate. Pupils will develop consistency and accuracy when striking a ball, understanding the importance of attacking space, and reducing space in the field.
Invasion games - Rugby League
Pupils will continue to explore invasion based sports- continuing to develop knowledge, understanding and basic attacking/ defending principles into a range of increasingly competitive scenarios. Pupils will continue to develop awareness of rules and regulations in games and continue to adhere. Pupils will develop confidence in performing in game scenarios, in particular working in uneven teams to promote attacking success
Art and DT
As artists, pupils will discover 'texture and layer painting techniques' taking inspiration from the work of 'Renoir.' Pupils will study Renoir’s work and his use of perspective – foreground and background. They will learn how to use a range of brushing techniques and how to mix colours effectively, experimenting by creating mood with colour.

Homework will be sent out on Friday to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. We expect each piece to take about 20 minutes. Please come and see us if there are any difficulties or write a note on the piece of work.
