Spring

Date: 23rd Apr 2025 @ 3:20pm

Last half term we focused on 'How we could get there'. It was a fantastic topic and we explored many different vehicles and modes of transport. We spent time building bridges and tunnels and experimented to find the best materials to build them. We went on a local walk up to the castle and discussed the bridges that join Widnes and Runcorn and the River Mersey. We spotted many local landmarks on our way. We used Beebots and programmed them to travel to different destinations and in different directions. The children really enjoyed this.

We also spent time learning all about the true meaning of Easter. We made Lenten promises and re-enacted the Easter story. We learned new Easter songs and performed them in school. We improved our scissor control making our cards.

To celebrate world Science Week, we found out all about caterpillars and marine life and did a lovely yoga session. We each planted a runner bean seed and found out all about the different parts of a plant and how we can help them to grow. We have taken them home now and are waiting to see who has the biggest runner bean! Please use Class Dojo to keep us informed of your progress.

In music, we explored many different instruments such as glockenspiels and tambourines and used these to compose and perform our songs.

In maths, we began counting to 20 and beyond (forwards and backwards) and began counting on from different numbers. We further consolidated the composition, representation, comparison and subitising of numbers 6 -10. We focused on number bonds and explored one more and one less. We also explored the days of the week, 3D shapes, patterns and measurement.

In literacy, we studied the book ‘The Journey Home’ and found out all about Hattie Peck and her chaotic life, rescuing abandoned hatchlings. We celebrated World Book Day and dressed up as our favourite characters from books. Some of us even made an amazing ‘Book in a Box’ ; it was a brilliant day! We started to compose simple sentences independently and worked on capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We know we must re-read our writing to check that it makes sense.

In phonics, we made great progress! We consolidated all of Phase 3 and the children are starting to read longer words with lots of different digraphs and trigraphs. We also started to incorporate these into our writing.

To end our term, we went to St Mary’s church to think about the true meaning of Easter.
What a busy half term we have had again! We look forward to next half term and I am confident that we will continue to make superb progress. As always, thank you for your continued support
